The Mindanao Migrants Center for Empowering Actions Inc. (MMCEAI) and AWO International distribute food packs with 10 kilos of rice, hygiene kits, assorted vegetables, malongs, mats, nail cutters, kitchen items, and other goods to 450 families or 2,139 persons of Maranao evacuees in ten (10) villages of Iligan city and in Piagapo town of Lanao del Sur where they settled in the last two months.
MMCEAI and AWO International partners with Ecoweb Inc. in extending this humanitarian assistance to house-based evacuees.
The distributed goods are based on “their expressed needs.”
MMCEAI — a non-government organization based in Davao city and is supporting migrant rights and advocating civilian protection against trafficking of persons, will include 59 lactating or pregnant women, eight persons with disabilities (PWD), and 71 elderly as beneficiaries of humanitarian services.
Those who can avail these are the evacuees at barangays Sta Elena (Bayanihan Village), Sta. Elena (Steeltown), Tomas Cabili, Tubod, Del Carmen, Baraas, Santiago, Sto. Rosario, Upper Hinaplanon, and Bonbonon. Other beneficiaries are the 9 families of evacuees at Piagapo town.
Ecoweb youth volunteers and from IDP groups helped in the repacking of goods.
On July 28, MMCEAI and AWO in collaboration with Ecoweb and CLEARNet also conducted a forum relating to illegal trafficking of persons at Ams Chicken Haus conference hall of Iligan.
The forum intended to increase the awareness and to engender protective measures among community leaders about the potential abuses of illegal recruitment and trafficking among vulnerable internally displaced persons, particularly the women and children.
The forum was participated by 29 representatives of varied community-based organizations supporting evacuees rights.
Inorisa Sialana-Elento, executive director of MMCEAI, is the resource person.
Participants are traditional leaders, community-based IDP leaders, ulama, representative of Lanao Council, Maranao women leaders, and a representative of City Social Welfare Development (CSWD).
